Dev Of Viral Needle In A Haystack Game Finds Creative Way To Mock AI Clones
Will this be cloned as well?
If you're an indie developer or simply follow the indie game scene, you've probably noticed the recent surge of AI clones flooding digital storefronts like Steam. It's becoming a serious problem, combining some of indie devs' biggest anxieties into one: AI-generated clones are copying viral game concepts, sometimes even before the originals can take off.
Needle in a Haystack Simulator, which also hasn't even been released yet, is probably the most prominent example of this trend. Because the concept is as simple as its name suggests, players literally search for a needle in a haystack, the game is an easy target for copycats. Developer NasNakarus decided to fight back in the most creative way possible, introducing a new game mode that replaces the familiar haystack with boxes of copycat games and challenges players to spot the one authentic title among the clones. It's unclear whether the mode is just a joke or will make it into the final release.
Needle in a Haystack Simulator is scheduled to launch in late 2026, with playtests set to take place this week. In the game, you have to search through a physics-based pile of around five million individual pieces of hay to find a single hidden needle. You can team up with friends, sell valuable items you uncover, and use the money to buy tools that help speed up your search.

Despite the clever comeback, this doesn't solve the broader problem indie developers have increasingly faced in recent months. At the Steam Indie Connect developer conference in South Korea on October 27, Valve reportedly addressed growing concerns about generative AI being used to clone games and sell them on Steam. However, rather than condemning the practice, the company has shifted the responsibility onto developers, suggesting they should make their games harder to copy.
