Developer Shows How to Make 2D Game Look 3D with Sprite Stacking

Teo Chhim's simple explanation will help you make magic.

Whether you're a 2D or 3D fan, it's always handy to know how to turn pixels into 3D shapes or at least make it seem like the objects in your game have another side to them.

Game developer Teo Chhim can teach you how to make 2D scenes look three-dimensional with a simple tutorial on sprite stacking. The idea is to offset layers and make them overlap. Chhim also explains how you can make the textures look as if they are rotating with the same technique.

This little trick is used in the creator's GameMaker murder mystery game, Detective Fantasia: EXCALIMURDER, a fun upcoming Game Boy-inspired story where Excalibur is the murder weapon.

On X/Twitter, they also share some other useful tutorials, like how to create a 2D pixel art ocean level or how to make a rotating room.
