Disney to Invest $1.5 Billion In Fortnite Developer Epic Games

The new partnership aims to build Unreal Engine-powered experiences based on Disney's IPs.

Disney and Unreal Engine developer Epic Games have just announced a new partnership that aims to expand Disney's reach by creating brand-new games and experiences based on the studio's IPs.

As part of this collaboration, the two companies plan to build an Unreal Engine-powered universe connected to Fortnite that will provide consumers with diverse opportunities to play, watch, shop, and engage with content, characters, and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and others. According to Disney, fans will be able to create their own stories and experiences and share content with each other within this new universe.

Additionally, Disney will invest $1.5 billion to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games as part of the partnership. At the moment, the studio noted, the transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including approvals by regulators.

"Our exciting new relationship with Epic Games will bring together Disney's beloved brands and franchises with the hugely popular Fortnite in a transformational new games and entertainment universe," commented Disney CEO Robert A. Iger. "This marks Disney's biggest entry ever into the world of games and offers significant opportunities for growth and expansion. We can't wait for fans to experience the Disney stories and worlds they love in groundbreaking new ways."

"Disney was one of the first companies to believe in the potential of bringing their worlds together with ours in Fortnite, and they use Unreal Engine across their portfolio," added Tim Sweeney, CEO and Founder of Epic Games. "Now we're collaborating on something entirely new to build a persistent, open, and interoperable ecosystem that will bring together the Disney and Fortnite communities."

At the moment, the degree to which the new universe will be linked to Fortnite is unclear. It is anticipated that it will be similar to Epic's collaboration with LEGO back in 2023, which introduced new LEGO experiences and skins to the game.
