Reality gamification at its finest.
Today, let's take a trip back in time for about a year and a half and revisit an absolutely jaw-dropping project from robotics enthusiast Handaru, also known as maHidaka, that can only be described as the pinnacle of reality gamification.
Check out ROS-Face, a mind-blowing Robot Operating System (ROS)-powered device that lets one control and manipulate human facial muscles using a typical gamepad, such as PlayStation or Logitech controllers or Nintendo Switch. Essentially, the mechanism involves sending small electric discharges potent enough to trigger muscle contractions. By connecting ROS to a gamepad, you can control these discharges, thereby manipulating the facial muscles.
"To explain ROS in a very simple way, ROS is a mechanism that allows robot parts (motors, sensors, PCs, etc.) to communicate easily by combining them like LEGO blocks," commented the creator. "By using this mechanism to make muscles move, it becomes possible to easily link human facial expressions with existing robot parts and PCs.
And here's a similar setup used to control hand movements:
The best thing is, if you know a thing or two about robotics and ROS, recreating the setup at home is quite simple, as the author has shared both the code and comprehensive schematics over on GitHub.
"maHidaka is not responsible for any accidents or damages caused by this project. Use of this code is at your own risk and is subject to the BSD2-Clause license," noted the developer.
