The community's response to the news has been critical, to say the least.
Electronic Arts is partnering with Stability AI, the company behind Stable Diffusion, to develop "transformative generative AI models, tools, and workflows," aimed at integrating generative technology into EA's game development process.
The collaboration is intended to integrate generative AI into EA's creative workflows, enhancing and accelerating processes such as prototyping and visual storytelling. By doing so, it aims to expand creative possibilities and allow artists to develop gameplay features "faster and at greater scale."
"EA is a pioneer in interactive entertainment and understands that innovation begins with the creator," Prem Akkaraju, CEO of Stability AI, says. "At Stability AI, we put creators at the center and build around their specific needs."
"Creativity has always been at the heart of everything our teams do," shares Kallol Mitra, VP of Creative Innovation at EA. "Together with Stability AI, we're amplifying that creativity. Giving artists, designers, and developers the power to dream bigger and build more."
The first planned initiative involves accelerating the creation of PBR materials by developing new artist-driven workflows. For instance, it implies creating the tools that generate 2D textures with exact color and light accuracy across any environment.
However, the audience gave the news of the partnership a rather lukewarm reception. Fans expressed skepticism toward the integration of AI tools into games. Among the possible reasons for this cautious response are concerns about the quality of AI-generated content and the potential impact on jobs within the industry.
Recently, EA has been frequently in the news over its upcoming $55 billion acquisition by a group of investors comprised of the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners.
