On January 30, Elon Musk, the Founder of Neuralink, announced that the first human patient had received an implant from the brain-chip startup on Sunday and is recovering well.
"The first human received an implant from Neuralink yesterday and is recovering well," shared Musk. "Initial results show promising neuron spike detection."
In a separate post on Twitter, Musk added that Neuralink's first product will be called Telepathy. It will allow users to control their phone or computer, and almost any other device, with just their thoughts. The first users will be people who have lost the use of their limbs.
The Neuralink project was initiated in 2016. They unveiled their device capable of transmitting brain signals via Bluetooth in July 2019.
Later, in September 2023, Neuralink obtained approval for the trial from an independent review board and started recruiting volunteers.
The company stated that the complete study will take about six years. Following the surgery, Neuralink experts will monitor the patient's progress and ensure the chip is functioning.
