Chris Avellone cited "recent events" as the reason behind his skepticism.
Ever since Microsoft acquired both Bethesda and Obsidian Entertainment, thousands of Fallout: New Vegas fans have hoped that with both studios under one roof, we might finally see new content related to what is arguably the best – and certainly the most beloved – Fallout installment to date, be it a remaster, a remake (preferably one where the devs would be given more than 18 months), or a sequel of some kind.
But guess who isn't particularly excited about a New Vegas remaster? Well, that would be none other than Chris Avellone, the writer of the original game and one of the Fallout series' founding fathers, who has expressed skepticism about the legendary RPG being remastered.
Obsidian
In his latest tweet, Avellone said he believes that "a Fallout: New Vegas remaster might not be such a great idea after all," citing "recent events" as the reason behind his doubts.
At present, it is unclear which events in particular the developer was referring to and whether he meant the recently released Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition, which launched with numerous bugs and broke players' mods and Creations, the quality of Obsidian's 2025 RPGs – Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 – both of which launched to poor player numbers and low user reviews, or perhaps both.
Interestingly, back in 2023, we reported on Avellone's revelation that Obsidian had proposed creating new Fallout titles to Bethesda in the late 2000s-early 2010s – proposals that Bethesda ultimately shut down.
With Obsidian's reputation fading with each subsequent release and remakes/remasters dominating in terms of sales and profits for their creators, it now seems like the situation may be the exact opposite from what it was 15 years ago – Bethesda and its parent company could be interested in producing new Fallout: New Vegas content, while the gaming community might not be interested in engaging with it.
