Fallout's Chris Avellone: Some Show Lines Are 'Embarrassing'
The designer shared his thoughts on adapting video games for the screen.
Cinematic adaptations of video games can be loved or hated. They bring new audiences to the beloved universes and pay tribute to them, but can also be criticized for stepping away from the original ideas. Amazon Prime's Fallout series has drawn plenty of reactions from fans and critics, and recently, Chris Avellone, a renowned designer best known for his work on Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights 2, and more, shared his thoughts on the cinematic adaptation.
In an interview with Insider Gaming, the designer said: "I kind of wish the game writing for TV shows like that where they're mimicking a game would kind of elevate a bit. Edgerunners was really cool, no problems there, but sometimes I just wish the script quality on the Fallout TV show was a little higher."
"I guess I feel embarrassed when I see some of the lines being done. But, you know, it's a fun show."
Speaking on cinematic adaptations in general, Avellone said: "I don't mean to put all Hollywood writers in this category, but I think some of them also still struggle with 'Okay, I'm writing a game franchise,' and obviously those game writers didn't really know what they were doing because 'I'm a respected Hollywood writer, and I know how these things are supposed to work.'"

He added that this approach can sometimes lead writers to move away from the original game's context in their own creative direction, which may mean missing some of the source's nuance: "They probably haven't played Fallout 3 or Fallout 4 or New Vegas. So, a lot of the context is gone, as well as opportunities."
