Fans Play DOOM in Deathmatch Tournament Using Lawnmowers

The winner got one of Husqvarna's mowers.

At this point, DOOM is getting more famous for the variety of ways you can play it than for its gaming value. We've seen it played with Notepad, a Milky Way bar, and even a pregnancy test, but none of these creative experiments offered high stakes.

But it's all behind us now, with the recently held DOOM tournament where participants played id Software's hit shooter with lawnmowers. Bethesda and Husqvarna, a brand that produces various outdoor tech products, including mowers, decided it was a great idea to have fans fight in 1v1 deathmatches, and they were right.

"We like to call this one hell of an update. For the first time in history, it's possible to mow down demons on a robotic lawn mower," said Björn Mannefred, Robotics Software Engineer at Husqvarna (via GGRecon). "We are thrilled to keep pushing the boundaries of innovation and in doing so, pay tribute to DOOM and its founders."

The challenge of this setup is that there are few buttons to control your character with. As PCGamesN's Dave Irwin reported, players could rotate a knob to turn around or push it to fire, use a big black button to shuffle forward, and press a red button to strafe and open doors.

Overall, it is not the most convenient controller but it works. Several days ago, the best DOOM players and lawnmower lovers faced each other in the final round of the tournament at DreamHack Winter 2023 to see who deserved the title of the ultimate champion, and the winner received – you guessed it – one of Husqvarna mowers.
