Farmhouse Explosion Made With Substance 3D & Houdini

Travis Rainford presented a recent personal exercise in explosion simulation, shading, and rendering.

With the house model provided by Substance 3D Assets, this explosion simulation was staged in Solaris and rendered with Karma XPU by VFX Artist Travis Rainford, who also included a quick breakdown of the process.

The artist has also shared some details on the performance, mentioning that every simulation was run for around 144 frames. The RBD simulation took approximately 10 minutes with 10 substeps, while the main explosion simulation was about 8 hours with 5 substeps and a voxel size of 0.025, and the inner fire simulation took about 2 hours, also using 5 substeps and a voxel size of 0.025.

"I rendered at 4K and 32 samples, denoised, then downsampled to 1080p, which saved me some time. Highest render time was around 20 min. Render time was around 28 hours on a single machine for 120 frames", commented Travis Rainford.
