The sales include both digital and physical copies.
Square Enix announced that the recently released Final Fantasy XVI passed 3 million copies sold. According to the statement, this figure reflects worldwide sales of both digital and hard copies. That marks a strong start only a week after the game’s launch on June 22, 2023. The game is only available only on PlayStation 5.
For comparison, Final Fantasy XV sold 5 million copies during its launch week in 2016, but the game was available for both PS4 and Xbox One. The current Final Fantasy VII remake sold over sold 3.5 million copies in its first three days of release.
Attractive marketing campaigns, including a sword in the Tower of London, supported a major release for Square Enix, Final Fantasy XVI. A replica of Invictus will be displayed there for one month. Also, ahead of the Final Fantasy XVI launch, a 3D ad featuring Eikon characters like Ifrit and Titan appeared in Tokyo. Later, more 3D advertisements appeared in Fukuoka, Osaka, and Shibuya.
However, all of these numbers pale in comparison to Nintendo’s big hit The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which sold a massive 10 million copies in just three days.
