Building the engine as a library, a dedicated ObjectDB profiler, and several other frequently requested features.
Following the release of Godot 4.5, work on the next major version of the Godot Engine is well underway, aiming to deliver many long-awaited features and enhancements. Also, in case you missed it, the first maintenance release for version 4.5 is here, and it's highly recommended that you update.
One of the key highlights in Godot 4.6 dev 2 is the initial work on support for building the engine as a library. This change responds to growing demand from developers who need to access the engine in isolated contexts for specific workflows and integrations.
Contributors have also begun addressing other frequently requested features. Notably, development has started on an ObjectDB profiling tool, and automatic mesh LOD has been improved through component pruning. The 3D Transform gizmo has been expanded as well, now displaying the current delta angle during rotation operations and introducing orbit snapping directly within the 3D Viewport.
Rendering sees significant improvements that enhance visual quality and lay the groundwork for HDR output support. One major change blends the glow effect before tonemapping across all rendering methods and blend modes (excluding soft light). Additionally, the default blend mode has been changed from soft light to screen in all renderers.
