Game Developer Nikita Nikiforov, also known as Nikita Nplus1, revealed how he made the distinctive visuals for his upcoming game Mayak, showcasing per-frame aberration and more. Take a closer look at this art style that blends impressionism with noir, created using digital oil painting:

Mayak is a hard sci-fi, side-scrolling visual novel about first contact, love, and a mysterious prime-number countdown, said to be inspired by the works of Lem, Heinlein, Egan, the Strugatsky brothers, and other classics. It puts you in the role of a young astronomer who has to investigate a strange signal from a distant star, unravel an alien mystery, and fight to save the one he loves.

Created by one person, the game features a linear narrative accompanied by operatic vocals, strings, saxophone, and warm analog synths. Also, there's real science with animated explanations of concepts like interstellar travel, star life cycles, signal transmission and decoding, and more:
