Gran Turismo Movie Theatrical Trailer Released

The Gran Turismo movie takes a fresh approach to video game adaptations by immersing viewers in a world obsessed with the franchise rather than telling a "story" of the game.

As The Super Mario Bros. Movie nears the end of its box office run, another video game adaptation is revving up for release. Sony's Gran Turismo movie, which centers around the beloved racing simulator, has set its premiere date for August 11 and unveiled a thrilling first-look trailer to build excitement.

The trailer reveals that the Gran Turismo movie takes a unique approach to video game adaptations. Instead of retelling the "story" of the popular racing game series, the film is set in a world where everyone is obsessed with Gran Turismo. The plot centers on a tournament to discover the top virtual racer and the champions are given the chance to race in real life.

Additionally, the film is based on the true story of the real-life professional racer Jann Mardenborough who indeed rose to fame after winning the GT Academy esports competition in 2011 and eventually became a professional racer in the prestigious Japanese Super GT series.

Archie Madekwe, known for his role in Midsommar, is set to portray Mardenborough in the film. The rest of the cast includes Orlando Bloom, David Harbour, Djimon Hounsou, and Geri Horner.

The Gran Turismo film is helmed by acclaimed director Neill Blomkamp, known for his work on Demonic, Chappie, Elysium, and District 9. The script is penned by Jason Hall, who wrote the award-winning film American Sniper, and Zach Baylin, who recently worked on the upcoming movie King Richard.

PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan are producing the film, with Gran Turismo creator and Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi serving as an executive producer.
