GTA 6 Boss Says the Game's Satire Has to Stand the Test of Time

Are you excited about this?

Rockstar Games

Grand Theft Auto 6 has been in development since 2015, and Rob Nelson, Head of Development and Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North, says developers had to be very careful with the ideas, social and political situations, and even jokes they put in the game.

In a conversation with TroisCouleurs, Nelson talked about how they managed to create a game that feels contemporary.

"We have to be very careful about what ideas we choose to put in there, because it can take a long time to figure out what our angle is on this. Because by the time we write it and cast it and shoot it, and implement it, whatever it is — it could be gone, it could change, it could be dated. And so we're always trying to think about whether something will stand the test of time," said Nelson.

He also added that they try to pick things that could be relevant in the game's story: "There are always ridiculous situations and behaviors that we can find, but we just have to be careful about what we pick."

In the interview, he also spoke about the female protagonist and the romantic relationship between the two characters, which lets players experience a more emotional side of the game.

"We thought about different options but ultimately wanted to try a duo, a partnership of some kind. If they're in a relationship, or have the potential to be in a relationship, what does that feel like? So it's a couple, it's Bonnie and Clyde," he explained.

GTA 6 will be released digitally on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. You can check out the first official gameplay footage that Rockstar revealed in August 2026, which shows a very detailed Vice City.
