GTA 6 Files Were Allegedly Leaked Because of Phishing Email

A person claiming to be Rockstar's employee confirmed that the hacker tricked a worker from Rockstar India with a scam message.

Back in 2022, Rockstar was hit by a hacker from Lapsus$, a hacking group that also attacked MicrosoftNVIDIA, Uber, and other companies. As a result, a 3 GB folder full of files and documents, including GTA 6 gameplay footage, was leaked online. The hacker, Arion Kurtaj, would later try to sell the source code for GTA 5 and 6 but would be arrested and sentenced to life inside a hospital prison in 2023.

Now, we might have a little more information about how Kurtaj managed to obtain the files. In July, content creator Mors Mutual Insurance released a video talking about Rockstar's security measures as one of the most secretive game developers out there, and the incident was also mentioned, of course.

In response, the creator received a message from an alleged Rockstar employee, who confirmed that "Arion tricked an employee from Rockstar India with an email phishing scam while they were working from home."

"The employee's browser data was logged, allowing Arion to access their Slack channels. The contact also mentioned that Rockstar India had been assigned to work on the entire Vice Beach area of the map, which should say enough of how big this game is going to be," Mors Mutual Insurance shared on X/Twitter.

As usual, don't trust anything on the internet, especially if there are no names attached, but if true, this is an interesting security breach case, which other studios should probably tell their workers about.

Naturally, the developers behind GTA 6 were disappointed by the leak and had to release its first trailer earlier than scheduled, but the former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij believes leaks don't really matter in the grand scheme of things.
