Here's How Simulon Can Be Used to Add 3D Models to Live Footage

The highly anticipated compositing app has been tried out by the one and only Hirokazu Yokohara.

In a pleasantly surprising collaboration, Hirokazu Yokohara, a renowned 3D Generalist, has recently partnered up with Divesh Naidoo to explore the beta version of Naidoo's upcoming compositing app, Simulon.

For those unfamiliar, the application in question has been making waves since late 2023 all thanks to its impressive ability to seamlessly incorporate 3D objects into real-life video footage, thus making high-quality VFX more accessible to all creators. In April, the development team made the beta version of Simulon available to a select group of individuals, most likely to test the tool's capabilities ahead of its slated launch in early 2025.

Evidently, Hirokazu was one of those lucky individuals, as a recent demo shared by the artist reveals his experiments with Simulon. Utilizing the app alongside an iPhone and Blender, the creator scanned his surroundings and easily inserted a 3D model of a quadruped robot into the scene, accomplishing the entire process in just a few minutes.

"The lighting and rendering settings in Blender were automatic, so I just sent the image from my iPhone and pressed the render button. As you can see, the quality is not perfect, but this kind of app is hot," commented Hirokazu (via Google Translate).

If you would like to learn more about Simulon before its release, we highly recommend checking out our interview with Divesh Naidoo, who previously told us about the story and development of Simulon, discussed the tool's features, and explained how Jurassic Park played an integral role in its creation.
