Here's What Sound Design Looks Like On Indie Developer's Budget

Starring a Zippo lighter, measuring tape, house keys, and a phone tripod holder.

Foley work is seriously cool, and way more underappreciated than it should be. Despite huge budgets, many films still rely on Foley since studios don't always have the perfect sound.

As Lonely Orca, the video's creator, explains, being a Senior Video Editor with tons of SFX folders makes him especially sensitive to reused or overly familiar sound effects. It's hard to take the drama seriously in films or games when your brain immediately jumps to your own sound library. "Wow, he's slamming the door in a fit of rage... using Door-Close003-NoVerb.wav," he jokes. That's why he enjoys creating his own sounds, even if they're not studio-quality.

The developer works on Born to Build, a multiplayer FPS powered by a custom voxel engine, something Ace of Spades fans will likely appreciate. We've covered on 80 Level before just how wild and creative sound design can get, like making armor clanks with kitchen tools for Love, Death & Robots, or using plungers, pasta, and even a baby's heartbeat in the womb for God of War Ragnarök.

One of the most beautiful things about art is that you can turn anything into a reference and make it work. In case you missed it, we recently shared some hilarious animation reference footage from KPop Demon Hunters. If you haven't seen it yet, you're in for a treat.
