"The economics never made sense. The risk never made sense. "
The gaming industry is on a fast track to adapting franchises into other art forms, like movies or live actions. However, some top franchises, such as GTA, have opted not to follow suit. Despite boasting a massive fan base and franchise sales exceeding 425 million units, we hear no news about a movie adaption.
In a recent interview with The Ankler, Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, shed light on the reason behind it.

Houser recalls the time when Rockstar was in discussions with Hollywood executives about a potential film. "After a few awkward dates,” he says, “we’d ask [the executives], why would we do this?” The executives' response was simple: “Because you get to make a movie.”
However, Houser and his team were not "blinded by the lights."
“And we'd be like, no, what you've described is you making a movie and us having no control and taking a huge risk that we’re going to end up paying for with something that belongs to us.
We had what we considered to be multi-billion-dollar IP, and the economics never made sense. The risk never made sense. In those days, the perception was that games made poor-quality movies.”
