A crucial step was made toward the game's 1.0 release. Get ready for an interconnected, communal universe.
After more than a decade in development, the crowdfunded space simulation game Star Citizen is edging closer to its 1.0 release. Chris Roberts, CEO of the game's developer Cloud Imperium Games, recently hinted at the game's progress, suggesting that the key milestone is within sight.

The major technological breakthrough of a player, known as "MrTrash," traveling between star systems via a wormhole, is a crucial step toward the MMO's 1.0 release. Roberts wrote in an update to backers:
After many hard years of work towards a goal many thought was impossible, we are on the cusp of delivering one of the final pieces of technology that will enable a connected, shared universe that thousands of people can experience together at the same time.

The pioneering technology, known as "server meshing", allows players to seamlessly transition between locations hosted on different servers. According to Roberts, this achievement also established a new record, accommodating 350 players concurrently on a Star Citizen server shard.

This ambitious project which had raised over $670 million in funding, has evolved into two distinct ventures: the Star Citizen persistent universe MMO and a single-player game titled Squadron 42.
On the one hand, Star Citizen recently achieved a new milestone; on the other hand, Squadron 42, featuring a star-studded cast including Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, and Gary Oldman, reached the feature complete stage last year.
Although Star Citizen has been playable for quite some time, its 1.0 release will mark the official completion of the game. However, this milestone doesn't imply the end of development. As Squadron 42 is feature complete, the development team is now setting its sights on the finish line for Star Citizen, gearing up to bring the long-awaited game into its next stage.
