Innovative Morse Code Game on Playdate Handheld

Alex Johansson turned the crank into a special controller.

Learning Morse code can be fun and easy with this new setup presented by experimental designer Alex Johansson, who turned Panic's Playdate handheld into a new device by adding a simple spring.

Playdate is a very simple-looking console: there are just a couple of buttons and a crank on the side. Johansson put the spring under the crank so it doesn't rotate but presses down, transforming the small handheld into a Morse code controller.

Of course, the device needs to be applied somewhere. Thankfully, Johansson has a game that's perfect for such experimentation. The idea is to destroy enemy ships by moving the target to the correct column and row by "typing" the letter and number in Morse code.

It looks really fun and will surely up your Morse code proficiency. Johansson is a talented innovator, who's working on several other projects. If you enjoy watching people think outside the box, be sure to check out his X/Twitter.
