Insomniac Scanned Real Locations in Japan for Marvel's Wolverine

The team gathered reference material from several environments in Japan, like snowy mountains, bamboo forests, and city streets.

Marvel's Wolverine, an action-packed adventure developed by Insomniac Games, coming September 15 to PlayStation 5, will feature an original story about the comic book character. The narrative will span various locations across the globe, including Canada, Japan, and the Marvel island nation of Madripoor.

To portray the environments with a high level of authenticity, the team at Insomniac Games conducted a series of exploration trips to scan environments and collect data to incorporate it into the game's locations. In their latest trip to Japan, the creators focused on recording real-world assets and examining natural environments.

The trip included a lot of preliminary work: virtual location scouting and route planning, conducted with the help of the Sony Interactive Entertainment teams in Japan.

"We spent hours traveling down Japanese highways, playing "I spy," debating whether hexagons are truly the best-a-gons, and buying mysterious drinks from roadside vending machines with very little questioning," Nathaniel Bell, Principal Technical Artist at Insomniac Games, shares.

Scanning of environment textures such as rock, bark, pavement, moss, metal, signage, and soil helps create a lifelike 3D world with believable small imperfections.

"The value of a trip like this goes beyond the scan data," Bell also notes. The team gained an understanding of how materials weather and how local cultural details appear in the environment. "Location scanning helps us create places that feel grounded and thoughtfully inspired rather than worlds pieced together from generic library assets."

Across the trip, the team collected material from several distinct environments: snowy mountains, bamboo forests, dense city streets, an underground train station, and roadside temples. Each setting contributed something different, from cold-weather surfaces and dense vegetation to urban wear and unique architectural styles.
