It Takes Two Creator Shared How Filmmaking Helped the Game Mechanics

Josef Fares explained why such mechanics as the game's Street Fighter section are not used more.

Josef Fares, the founder of Hazelight Studios, which developed It Takes Two, shared why the many varied mechanics in the game are not reused.

He said it doesn't take much time to come up with mechanics, but polishing them might take a while.

"The hardest thing is the duration of the mechanic because you can create good prototype mechanics quite fast," he told TheGamer. "You can do it in a week or two, but to polish them where they feel really nice, it takes a little while but polish it if you can do that."

Fares is also a film director, and he thinks it helps him pace the mechanics right and not make games repetitive.

"I think it comes into my movie background, because in the movie, there's always something happening. You're not repeating everything. I remember with the Street Fighter section, it took us like six months to put together to play for two minutes. And the thing like why aren't we reusing it? But imagine having a great scene in the movie. You don't have to see it again, you just have it one time."

Fares shared the development process behind the game before BAFTA Games Awards 2022, where It Takes Two won the Best Original Property and Multiplayer awards.
