Jagex Unveils Fourth RuneScape MMO Powered by Unreal Engine
Jagex also shared that an animated adaptation set in the RuneScape universe is planned.
Jagex announced a fourth RuneScape MMO, powered by Unreal Engine, along with an animated adaptation of Gielinor's stories and new content for RuneScape games.
This year's RuneFest, an annual event for RuneScape players, which was held in Birmingham, England, brought a handful of exciting announcements. The most thrilling is probably the new installment in the RuneScape franchise. At the fest, Jagex shared a first look at the new game with a teaser trailer. The game is currently early in development, and its name hasn't been defined yet; RuneScape 4 is the working title as of now.
As for the release date, Jagex shared "the game is still a few years away." The studio wants to build on the tech development it learned on Dragonwilds, the best of the community co-development it learned through RuneScape and Old School, and apply those principles to a new project.
Jagex shared that the new fantasy MMO is created for a "new generation of players." We don't know many details about the new RuneScape game yet, but we do know it will be powered by Unreal Engine. Also, Jagex revealed that the new MMO will be set in Gielinor, in the Sixth Age, years after the events of Dragonwilds and the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra. The story will start in Ashenfall. The developer promises the new MMO will combine the depth, freedom, and community-led spirit that have defined RuneScape for 25 years with today's technology and game-design possibilities.
