While the global gaming market is experiencing a 7% drop, Japan is thriving: its market grew 1.4% year-on-year to 2.03 trillion yen (around $13.9 billion) in 2022.
According to a recent report by Kadokawa ASCII Research Laboratories (translated by Kantan Games), the quickly expanding Japanese PC gaming market jumped 43% from 131.3 billion yen ($0.9 billion) to 189.2 billion yen ($1.3 billion) last year.
The console hardware segment also increased 3.4% year-on-year to 209.8 billion yen (US$1.4 billion), and the console software segment (including digital downloads and online sales) grew 5.9% to 389.3 billion yen (US$2.7 billion).
Mobile gaming is the country's biggest market at the moment, with games there reaching 1.2 trillion yen (US$8.5 billion) in 2022 – down 4.4% on the year.
Perhaps such numbers are not surprising: after all, Nintendo Switch is keeping a strong hold on players in Japan, selling 30 million consoles there.
