Kenney Shape, Tool for Generating Extruded 3D Models from 2D Pixel Art, Is Now Free

Kenney Vleugels, also known as KenneyNL, made their tool for turning pixel art into 3D shapes free forever for everyone.

Renowned game asset creator and game developer Kenney Vleugels, who created Make Room, a cozy isometric builder, announced that they are making one of their tools free forever. Kenney Shape is a tool for turning pixel art into 3D shapes. It uses 2D pixel art as a source for generating 3D assets through pixel extrusion.

All you need to do is draw a 2D pixel-art object, set the desired depth for each pixel, and Kenney Shape will generate a 3D model. It does the UV mapping automatically, so you can skip this step entirely. Once the asset is ready, you can export it as a 3D and voxel model or as a bitmap and vector image.

You can then transfer the objects to almost any major 3D design tool for game developers, including Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot, and Blender. Voxel files are compatible with MagicaVoxel, VoxEdit, and Goxel. Because the creator of the tool focuses on making game-ready assets, all the models created with Kenney Shape are automatically optimized, but you can polish them manually if needed.

Kenney Shape used to be a paid tool, but now it's free for everyone to use and keep forever. According to the artist, they made this decision because they wanted to focus on other projects instead. Kenney Shape won't be getting any updates, making the October 2026 update its last one.

The tool is available on Windows and Linux, and you can download it here. Make sure you check out other free tools for pixel-art enthusiasts by KenneyNL on their website: you can get Avatar Mixer, Creature Mixer, and Ship Mixer to create assets for your pixelated designs.
