Layoffs, Delays & Game Cancellations: What's Going on at Ubisoft?

The studio's massive reorganization has begun.

Ubisoft announced an internal restructuring, and with that, declared that it has delayed seven games and cancelled six others that were currently in development, with one of them being Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Announced in 2024, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time had a possible release date scheduled for 2026. With the newly-announced changes at Ubisoft, it seems the remake is never going to see the light of day, as it was revealed that six games have been cancelled, supposedly because they didn't meet the new quality expectations of the publisher.

Jason Schreier said in a Bluesky post that the other cancelled games are four unannounced titles and one mobile game, while the seven delayed include the rumored Black Flag remake.

Ubisoft also said that the restructuring involves the creation of five specialized Creative Houses, which are Vantage Studios, Creative House 2, 3, 4, and 5, with each focusing on different projects. While the topic of layoffs wasn't directly addressed, the company confirmed its intention to continue "accelerating its cost reduction initiatives," meaning we're likely to see the studio fire even more of its workers.
