Learn How to Layer Materials in Marmoset Toolbag 5 from This Tutorial

A very useful tool for any artist.

Marmoset

Marmoset Toolbag 5 was released several months ago, but if you haven't started using it in fear of getting frustrated by its new features, don't worry: the company has tutorials to help.

Material layering is one of the most prominent points of the update, and 3D artist Stephanie Everett will teach you how to deal with it in a new tutorial.

Material layering lets you create complex, blended multi-material effects, with or without UVs. It allows you to use world space or UV tiling to achieve the right textile density independently on each material layer to reach higher fidelity textures that aren't restricted to a model's texture resolution. Or it can add complex material details to meshes with no UV data.

In the tutorial, Everett shows how to add dynamic depth and variation to props, characters, and large-scale assets like buildings and terrain.

You’ll learn about:

  • How material layers work and their impact on your workflow.
  • Using vertex colors for realistic blending.
  • Triplanar projection for texturing UV-free meshes.
  • Painting custom RGBA masks for per-channel blending.
  • Advanced terrain texturing techniques.
  • Creating a debug material to preview vertex color assignments.
