After MachineGames announced their long-awaited Indiana Jones and the Great Circle game, which is a first-person, single-player adventure, more and more fans have started voicing their dissatisfaction, saying that it's an "absolutely terrible idea", and that they'd rather play it from a third-person perspective.
However, during a recent interview with Lucasfilm, the developers behind the game shared that the first-person gameplay is the best option for the Indiana Jones games, as it "separates our game from many other action-adventure titles."
"First-person gameplay is part of MachineGames' DNA, and we wanted to see how we could use this to create a really immersive experience around stepping into the shoes of the world's most famous archaeologist. It also separates our game from many other action-adventure titles, making it a unique experience that you cannot find anywhere else," said Jerk Gustafsson, the Director of the game. "However, we still want to show Indy as much as possible, so we have a seamless flow between first-person gameplay and third-person actions, events, and cinematics."

Gustafsson also shed light on some aspects of game development, sharing that creating an iconic whip was one of the most complicated tasks they had. MachineGames tried to make it "as useful and versatile as possible," allowing players to use it not only as a traversal tool, so you could swing and climb, but also as a combat tool.
"We also decided to go for a fully simulated whip, which made it challenging from a technical perspective, but we gained that gritty and realistic feel to it that is so important to us," shared Gustafsson.
At Developer Direct 2024, MachineGames presented Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, as well as shared a first look at its gameplay. The game is slated for release later this year, and it's coming to Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass.
