Marvel Is Being Criticized for Using AI in Secret Invasion Intro

One cannot just do it without consequences.

Marvel Studios has recently released the first episode of Secret Invasion, a series following Nick Fury and his allies trying to prevent an invasion of Skrulls, alien shapeshifters. Everything was supposed to be fine, but then viewers saw the intro and got infuriated because it's immediately clear the opening credits were made using AI.

The show's director and executive producer Ali Selim thinks this is actually really fitting as it's what Secret Invasion is about – aliens changing appearance so you never know if it's a human or not.

“When we reached out to the AI vendors, that was part of it — it just came right out of the shape-shifting, Skrull world identity, you know? Who did this? Who is this?Selim told Polygon.

He was fascinated with how the AI could show the sense of foreboding he wanted. “We would talk to them about ideas and themes and words, and then the computer would go off and do something. And then we could change it a little bit by using words, and it would change.”

The sequence was created by Method Studios, which has worked on Ms. Marvel, Loki, Moon Knight, and more. While Selim felt the intro was "explorative and inevitable, and exciting, and different", the audience wasn't as happy and spread some harsh words on the internet.

The studio later released a statement explaining that while the characters were made with AI, there was a lot of human effort and actual animators, directors, and other professionals working on the scene, and no jobs were replaced by the technology.

Earlier, Blaze Entertainment was also seen using an AI-made image for its Duke Nukem 1+2 Remastered. After the backlash from players, the studio soon removed the picture.

In these difficult times when many specialists, especially artists, are worried about being replaced by machines, it is not wise to use AI so blatantly unless you're looking for criticism. Selim's reasoning makes some sense but doesn't make it better in viewers' eyes.
