Metal Gear Solid 4: Behind The Scenes In Softimage XSI
A look at how the game was made using the classic 3D software.
Released in 2008, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was a PlayStation 3 exclusive that made full use of the console and became one of the most popular games in the franchise. After years of being tied to that console, it's finally coming to modern systems this August as part of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, which also includes Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.
For this reason, let's take a look at resurfaced images of MGS4 models inside Softimage XSI, which was the main 3D tool used during production. If you're interested in learning more about the development process, there's an interview with Kojima Productions that covers character creation, animation, texturing, and more. Interestingly, the same character models, with identical polygon counts, were used in both gameplay and in-engine cutscenes. This made the transition between action and story scenes smooth, helping players stay immersed. The team also developed a tool to automatically create facial rig setups that achieve an advanced level of control.
