Metro 2039 Runs at 4K With 60 FPS and Ray Tracing Even on PS5 and Xbox

Metro 2039 launches in February, and new gameplay shows its unique brand of survival mechanics, brutal combat, and post-apocalyptic Moscow.

4A Games has announced that Metro 2039 will launch on February 4, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The release date was accompanied by the first console gameplay footage shown during PlayStation's recent State of Play broadcast. The gameplay was captured on PlayStation 5 Pro at 60 FPS. The new sequence follows the Stranger as he leaves the Metro’s tunnels and ventures onto the thawing, irradiated surface of post-apocalyptic Moscow.

Notably, it sounds like the game is optimized to look and run at a high-level even on base consoles. 4A Games confirmed in its press release as much:

"At launch, a Performance Mode with 4K 60FPS and ray tracing will be available across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and XBOX Series X consoles."

The game remains a solo, story-driven first-person shooter combining survival, exploration, stealth, and direct combat. Players will need to manage radiation exposure and equipment while choosing between silent and aggressive approaches to hostile spaces.

Metro 2039 is being developed with the latest iteration of the proprietary 4A Engine. The studio says it is the first Metro game created from the beginning around ray tracing, building upon the technology introduced through Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition. That 2021 release replaced traditional lighting with fully ray-traced global illumination while still targeting 60 FPS on current-generation consoles.

"For Metro 2039, we’ve built on everything we’ve learned in years since to deliver the best-looking Metro to date, and of course we’re delighted to confirm that both PS5 and PS5 Pro players will be able to experience Metro 2039 with ray tracing, including at a smooth 60fps with a dedicated Performance Mode."

- PlayStation Blog post

Metro 2039 will launch on February 4, 2027, in most territories and February 5 in regions including Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. The game can be wishlisted now, with pre-orders scheduled to open later this year.

The newly confirmed date places Metro 2039 at the beginning of an extraordinarily crowded February. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis follows on February 12, God of War: Laufey on February 16, Persona 4 Revival on February 18, and Fable on February 23.
