Naughty Dog is Not Part of the Production of HBO's The Last of Us Season 3

What do you think about this?

HBO

The HBO series The Last of Us became one of the most successful and acclaimed video game adaptations shortly after its 2023 release, even drawing in people who had never played the game.

The first season of the TV show was created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, who is the Studio Head and Head of Creative at Naughty Dog, the developer of The Last of Us games. He and Mazin were also part of the second season alongside Halley Gross.

In a conversation about good video game writing with Gene Park of The Washington Post, Druckmann revealed that neither he nor Naughty Dog is part of the production of Season 3 of the series.

"I wasn't involved in shaping this season's creative direction, and Naughty Dog did not have a creative role in the direction of this season. So I can't personally speak to how production is progressing," Druckmann said.

Nonetheless, he also said that Naughty Dog is still the holder of the IP, and even though Season 3 of The Last of Us might be the end of the adaptation, the studio has other projects in that universe in the works, but he didn't give more details.

Halley Gross also stepped away from the creative team to focus on other projects, leaving Mazin as the show's only showrunner.

Season 3 doesn't have a release date yet, but it's expected to arrive in 2027.
