New GitHub Copilot App Mascot Was Created In Blender
"In the age of AI slop, some of us are still making things by hand."
This new cooking animation, featuring the mascot of the source-code hosting service GitHub, is very cute (and yes, Octocat has a face). As you can see from the behind-the-scenes look, it was modeled, rigged, and animated by Cameron Foxley, GitHub's principal brand designer. You can also interact with it directly in your browser by clicking here.
However, it's hard to ignore the elephant in the room: this hand-crafted animation was made for the launch of the technical preview of the GitHub Copilot app, an AI-powered coding assistant. It integrates directly into your code editor to speed up software development by autocompleting code and answering various questions. Coding is, of course, not the same as drawing or modeling, but there's still an obvious irony in anti-AI sentiment paired with a human-made marketing asset promoting an AI product.
If you're interested in the GitHub Copilot app, you can join the waitlist for early access to the technical preview.
Recently, Blender was involved in controversy surrounding Claude developer Anthropic joining as a Corporate Patron in the Blender Development Fund. Francesco Siddi, Blender's CEO, had to clarify Blender's AI policy, after which Anthropic's support was reduced to a one-time donation.
Also, in case you missed it, Blender 5.2 LTS is now in alpha, and users are sharing early showcases of its new features, including updated cloth dynamics:
