Claude AI Creator Anthropic Joins Blender Development Fund as Corporate Patron

Claude AI creator Anthropic joins a growing list of corporate contributors supporting Blender’s ongoing development and infrastructure. What will this mean for future updates to the free, open-source 3D creation tool?

In case you missed it

Blender 5.1 is Out

The Blender Foundation has announced that Anthropic has joined the Blender Development Fund as a Corporate Patron, adding another major technology company to the list of organizations supporting the open-source 3D creation tool. You can read more info about Blender's funding policy here.

The Development Fund serves as Blender’s primary source of financial support, enabling the foundation to employ full-time developers and continue work on core features, performance improvements, and long-term infrastructure. Contributions from corporate partners play a key role in sustaining that development alongside individual backers.

You can see details on Blender's latest features in 5.1, from just a few weeks ago, right here.

"In these uncertain and divisive times, we appreciate Anthropic offering support to the Blender project in the form of a Patron-level membership. This enables the Blender team to keep pursuing projects independently, and to focus on building tools for artists and creators."

- Francesco Siddi, CEO at Blender

Anthropic joins existing contributors that include companies from across the games, VFX, and software industries. Blender is continuously adopted as a production tool in a range of pipelines. Even the upcoming Backrooms film from A24 used Blender for concept art.

The software has seen growing use in real-time content creation, game development, and animation workflows, particularly among teams looking for open-source alternatives to proprietary tools.

While Anthropic’s broader focus is on AI systems, like its flagship Claude AI assistant, the announcement itself centers on financial support for Blender’s development rather than any specific product integration or feature roadmap. As with other corporate patrons, the contribution helps fund ongoing work but does not necessarily translate into immediate changes to the software.

"This support will be dedicated towards Blender core development, to maintain and continuously improve foundational features like the Blender Python API, which enables developers and artists alike to extend and improve the software for custom workflows."

- Blender Blog Post

New sources of funding are crucial for Blender to remain free and open-source. Blender’s growth over the past decade has been closely tied to its ability to secure consistent backing, allowing it to evolve beyond a niche tool into a widely adopted platform across multiple industries.

As more companies rely on the tool in production, continued investment in its core development remains a key factor in maintaining stability, performance, and feature growth over time.
