Director of Upcoming Backrooms Film Created Concept Art in Blender
Kane Parsons shared details about creating the forthcoming A24 film.
Kane Parsons, the director of the upcoming A24 horror film Backrooms, set to release on May 29, has revealed that he used Blender to create concept art for the movie.
At CCXP Mexico, the 20-year-old filmmaker, who has become the youngest director to work with A24, shared some details about how he brought eerie liminal spaces to the screen. Parsons emphasized the importance of set design in achieving the film's unsettling atmosphere, noting that he turned to Blender to develop his vision for the liminal interiors, and underscored the effort that went into perfecting every detail:
"I was working in Blender, modeling the sets, and then we would literally go and build them in real time," the director said (via The Hollywood Reporter). "We did a lot of tests to make sure we were getting the general tone that people expected. We did 50 wallpaper tests to get the right shade of yellow."
The director also shared his vision of the backrooms as a phenomenon:
The film follows the story of a shop assistant in a furniture store who discovers a weird space of endless, ever-changing corridors behind one of the doors in the shop. The movie is based on Parsons' eponymous web series that the creator posted on his YouTube channel titled Kane Pixels. The concept of backrooms is inspired by the eerie aesthetics of liminal spaces.
