New Global Game Jam Initiative Connects Indie Studios With Emerging Talent

Supported by the Endless Foundation, the new GGJ Micro-Missions pilot will connect indie studios with aspiring developers through paid art, audio, and QA projects designed to provide production support, portfolio-building opportunities, and real-world industry experience.

One of the biggest challenges facing aspiring game developers today isn't learning the necessary skills, it's gaining the professional experience needed to break into the industry.

At the same time, many indie studios face the opposite problem: limited production budgets and a lack of short-term resources for tasks such as asset creation, audio production, and quality assurance testing.

Global Game Jam hopes to address both challenges through a new initiative called GGJ Micro-Missions: Small Projects, Big Impact.

Supported by the Endless Foundation, the pilot program aims to connect emerging developers with active indie game projects through paid micro-projects that can typically be completed in less than 48 hours. The initiative is designed to give participants practical industry experience while providing additional production support for studios.

"GGJ Micro-Missions" focuses on three core areas: artwork, audio, and QA testing.

"Through GGJ Micro-Missions, we're giving emerging talent the chance to work on games, build out their portfolios and get paid. It might seem like a small thing, but for far too many aspiring game creators those real-world opportunities have been out of reach for too long. At the same time, we're helping indie studios in our community accelerate the commercialization of their games.

Micro-Missions builds upon the foundation of GGJ as we seek to serve jammers not only for 48 hours in January but year-round. We  listened to members of our community about where they see a need and this program was created to address what we were hearing."

- Maria Burns Ortiz, Global Game Jam Executive Director

According to Global Game Jam, the initiative is intended to tackle two persistent industry issues simultaneously: the difficulty many aspiring developers face when trying to gain professional experience, and the limited production capacity available to smaller independent studios.

Over the next year, GGJ plans to award participating studios microgrants of up to $2,500 each. Those funds will be used to create and manage project opportunities tied directly to active game development efforts.

The GGJ Micro-Missions pilot is currently in its pre-launch phase, with additional information for both participating studios and aspiring developers expected in the coming months.
