New Gnomon Tutorial on Cinematic Lighting for Portraits

The Gnomon Workshop has made available Lighting the CG Portrait, their new guide to recreating real-world photographic studio lighting in 3D.

The video training was recorded by Brand New School CG supervisor Chris Barischoff, and it discusses a renderer-agnostic approach to the principles of portrait lighting.

It features over three hours of videos with Barischoff showing how to create a lighting setup for CG portraits based on techniques used in real-world photographic studios.

Using a character model created by Satoshi Takazawa, Barischoff discussed artistic and technical aspects of setting up great character lighting.

The artist used V-Ray Next for Maya, Photoshop and Nuke for editing images, but you could use the tips with any render engine. You can learn more and get started here.
