NieR Series Producer and Director Working on a New Mysterious Project

"It might be NieR, it might not be NieR." I'm scratching my head over this one.

Square Enix's Yosuke Saito, the producer of the popular NieR series, has initiated a new joint venture with series director Yoko Taro and composer Keiichi Okabe.

This was revealed in a recent issue of Weekly Famitsu, a renowned Japanese video game magazine, and translated by Gematsu. Saito, in conversation with Hiroyuki Kobayashi, the former Capcom producer, has said that:

"I've been talking about wanting to do something with Yoko-san and Okabe-san for some time now. I'll have something a bit more comprehensive to say in the not-too-distant future, so please stay tuned. It might be NieR, it might not be NieR [laughs]. That's all I can say for now."

Last year, Saito assured fans that the NieR franchise will continue as long as its creator, Yoko Taro, is alive. This assurance, combined with Taro's recent tease for NieR 3 during the NieR: Orchestra Concert in London, has sparked great speculation.

In addition to this collaboration, Saito hinted at another project saying:

“I’m doing various things with the idea of creating something that does not yet exist,” Saito said. “I can’t devote my time to that fully, so most of it has been left to the staff, but it’s turning into something quite interesting. I’m looking forward to the day we can announce it.”

Given the seven-year gap between the first game and its sequel, NieR: Automata, and a similar time span since Automata's 2017 release, it seems reasonable to anticipate a third installment in the franchise at this moment.

Anyway, Saito said he would "have something a bit more put-together to say in the not-too-distant future", so let's be patient.
