NieR Series Will Continue as Long as Yoko Taro Is Alive

At least that's what producer Yosuke Saito says.

The NieR franchise is beloved by many, and those fans have nothing to worry about in terms of new games, it seems. That's according to its producer Yosuke Saito, who promised the series will continue as long as its creator Yoko Taro is alive.

This talk at the G-Star conference, first reported by 4Gamer and then translated by Genki_JPN, focused on the development of NieR: Automata. Taro said the director's job is to design not for fun but for "the meaning of buying." They have to think about creating new reasons for purchasing the game, like love for art or music. He mentioned that Automata was developed with this in mind, the goal was to make a title that players would want to talk about it and that would remain in their memories.

It was also said that the image of a Gothic Lolita girl with a sword was meant to appeal to the Japanese audience and hopefully be supported by a niche market overseas as the creators didn't know the tastes of players outside their country. I think it's safe to say their bet played really well all over the world.

Finally, Saito shared that he is working with Taro on a new project but he didn't offer any details on it, saying he hopes to talk about it next year.

The NieR series of action RPGs has been around since 2010, while Automata was released in 2017. Could this new project be a new installment in the franchise? I honestly doubt it, but time will tell.
