According to the latest reports, Nintendo has officially started a war with the developers of the Yuzu emulator, an open-source Nintendo Switch emulator.
The company accuses the creators of the Yuzu emulator of unlawfully circumventing Switch encryption to facilitate piracy.
"Today, Yuzu provides any Internet user in the world with the means to unlawfully decrypt and play virtually any Nintendo Switch game — including Nintendo's current generation and most popular games – without ever paying a dime for a Nintendo console or for that game. And to be clear, there is no lawful way to use Yuzu to play Nintendo Switch games, including because it must decrypt the games' encryption," as stated in the lawsuit (via IGN).
The pirated version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was downloaded over a million times prior to its official release, leading to a surge in financial support for Yuzu on Patreon.
Nintendo also claims that Yuzu's business model promotes piracy and that running The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on the emulator has led to spoilers being leaked online.
As a result, Nintendo is seeking to have the creators of the emulator face trial before a jury and pay $150,000 in damages for each copyrighted work. Nintendo also aims to receive actual damages and any profits that Yuzu may have acquired from its alleged violations. And, of course, the creators should put an end to the development of the emulator.
