No One Says a Word in This Detective Card Game
But you'll still enjoy this experience that might remind you of Cultist Simulator.
Raw Fury
I want to start this review with a complaint: Hillthorn's demo is criminally short! But that's not the only sketchy thing going on here.
In this indie game by Fool Moon and Finnegan Motors, you investigate a mysterious disappearance. You have been contacted by a grieving mother whose daughter is nowhere to be found after a hiking trip with her boyfriend. The mother has her suspicions about the guy, and it's your job to head to the treacherous trails and find out what happened.
"Only the foolish and the desperate attempt to wander the mazelike trails of Hillthorn. Even those who know their way may still stumble upon dangerous wildlife or a local villager’s piercing gaze. But a child has gone missing, time is in short supply, and you’re the one being tasked with unraveling the mountain’s secrets. Welcome to Hillthorn, a dark investigation game unlike any other, where the mystery unfolds without a single word spoken."
Raw Fury
If you think people will tell you whatever you want, you're not a good detective. While the game reminds me of Cultist Simulator with its card interactions and animations, its unique mechanic is that nobody really says anything. You will not see lines of dialogue, but cards like Doubts and Nervous will have to be enough for you to uncover the truth.
Raw Fury
You have verb cards, like Talk and Explore, which you need to combine with other cards to produce certain results. But beware: the clock is ticking, and when the day ends, you'll forget some of your items.
Raw Fury
The developers and publisher Raw Fury (Blue Prince, Dome Keeper, Kingdom) promise multiple endings depending on your findings.
I got hooked right away and was really disappointed when the game's demo ended. If you want to try your hand at mystery solving, check out Hillthorn on Steam before its release in November.
