Once-Viral Game About Racing & Losing Limbs In Cartoonish Ways Is Now On Steam
Happy Wheels is back, with some new additions.
Five years ago, Adobe Flash Player was officially discontinued, taking countless beloved browser games with it. Some managed to survive, though, and even take on a new form, including Happy Wheels, the hugely popular 2010 ragdoll-physics racing game known for its absurdly graphic violence.
Its creator, Jim Bonacci, brought Happy Wheels to Steam last week, along with a pretty heartfelt message. He said he was surprised by just how many people were waiting for the game to make its way to modern platforms:
"Moments before this release of Happy Wheels, I sit in terror looking at the 750,000 wishlists statistic. I realistically was thinking maybe 5k at best, and then maybe it would gain some momentum as it casually settles into its new environment. After all, the game has been publicly available for 16 years.
I realize now that it has been floating on an isolated island in space. As a 20+ year Steam connoisseur and a game developer with zero contacts in the industry, it's both shocking and supremely welcoming to get this type of reception in the form of this absurd number 2 weeks after adding it to the store. Thank you so much to those that, for some unfathomable reason, still find Happy Wheels at least somewhat interesting. It's a game that requires community to function, and it seems apparent that it will have one for a bit longer."

According to the developer, Happy Wheels will continue to receive updates after launch, including "improvements to controller and Steam Deck play, offline support, achievements, bug fixes, and more."
This release isn't just a nostalgia trip: it brings over 5 million user-created levels, while also letting you create and share your own through the fully featured level editor and browse levels submitted by other players. You can also link your old Happy Wheels account to your Steam ID, automatically log in across multiple devices, and download levels for offline play. And, perhaps best of all, there are no ads.
