One-Click Line Art From Any 3D Model In Blender
Masamune Sakaki's tool is free.
If you want an easy way to get line art from a Blender model, you can try the FreePencil2 add-on, made by Japanese anime producer and animator Masamune Sakaki. The workflow is simple: open your model, press one button, and the outlines appear. You can fine-tune the lines afterward if you need a specific look.
"In this update, lines now appear on boundaries that previously fell short of the detection threshold and disappeared. The second half of the video shows the actual screen. 155 parts finish in 5.5 seconds. The line volume can be adjusted later with the slider." (machine translated)
Here's how the developer describes the workflow behind the tool:
"The model is automatically colored using vertex colors, and the color boundaries are detected as lines using edge detection in a compositor (a method known as color coloring). Because the principle is simple, it is fast, and even a model with 1.28 million polygons can be processed in less than 30 seconds.
The difficulty with color separation techniques lies in the pre-processing step of 'how to color the areas.' FreePencil2 automates this process.
- Automatic determination of division angle from the distribution of dihedral angles;
- Color adjacent graphs so that adjacent regions always belong to different color classes;
- Automatic merging of minute regions;
- Tone differentiation between touching parts;
- Bone-level color separation based on rig detection" (machine-translated)
