Silent Hill: Townfall, announced back in October 2022, is finally out 4 years later. The spin-off is set in the fictional town of St. Amelia in Scotland in 1996. You play as Simon Ordell, voiced by Jovan Adepo, who mysteriously finds himself waking up in the water by the docks in St. Amelia. Your character has to dig deep into the town's secrets to understand his chilling connection to it.

You are equipped with a concerningly limited set of weapons and tools, one of them being the CRTV – a handheld TV device that helps you receive unstable signals. You need it to detect nearby threats, catch a glimpse of essential story fragments that guide you further, and collect clues to solve endless puzzles.

Silent Hill: Townfall is the first full-length game in the series where you play from a first-person perspective. Because the game is set in a foggy, gloomy town in Scotland, there is limited visibility that makes your journey all the more eerie.

Critics ranked the new installment in the Silent Hill series fairly high, with most of them giving it a 4/5 or 8/10 rating. According to OpenCritic, 86% of critics recommended the game. The players, however, are harder to please: on Steam, they have mixed feelings toward Townfall, mostly because of stuttering, as many negative reviews point out.

It's not the first Silent Hill game to frustrate players with stuttering issues: the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake has the same problems. It all boils down to how Unreal Engine processes transitions between different game zones and loads frames. The team, however, reacted quickly and promised to fix performance issues in an upcoming update patch.

Despite performance issues, the number of players in the game keeps going up. Silent Hill: Townfall made it to #11 among Steam's top sellers and gathered 978 (70.8%) positive reviews.
