One of The Most Influential VR Games Ever is Finally Getting a Sequel

Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades 2 brings the legendary VR sandbox shooter to Quest hardware for the first time while evolving the series into a full extraction experience.

After over a decade as one of VR’s most respected and influential sandbox shooters, Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades is officially getting a sequel.

Developer Rust Ltd has announced Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades 2 (H3VR2), a new extraction-focused follow-up coming to both Meta Quest 3/3S and SteamVR headsets. The reveal debuted during the Creature Feature 2026 VR showcase, positioning the sequel as a major evolution of one of VR’s longest-running and most mechanically ambitious games.

The original game has an 'Overwhelmingly Positive' average user rating for English reviews on Steam with over 19,000 submitted. Steam Revenue Calculator estimates over $20.8M in revenue.

Originally launched into Steam Early Access in 2016, the first H3VR became widely regarded as a benchmark for VR firearm interaction and simulation design. Its detailed weapon handling, physics systems, sandbox experimentation, and years of continuous updates helped shape expectations for interaction fidelity in VR games more broadly.

Over time, it developed a dedicated community around realistic weapon mechanics, modding, and systems-driven gameplay.

Rather than simply recreating the original experience, H3VR2 expands the formula into a more structured extraction shooter framework. Players will explore procedurally generated facilities, gather loot, complete objectives, and extract resources while fighting the series’ signature sentient hot dog enemies.

Rust Ltd also confirmed competitive features and leaderboard-driven systems as part of the game’s broader progression structure. The sequel will also be coming to Quest 3, a first for H3VR.

Honestly, the platform shift may be just as significant as the sequel itself. The original game remained PC VR-exclusive throughout its lifespan due largely to the complexity of its simulation systems and interaction density. Bringing H3VR2 to standalone Quest hardware suggests substantial work around optimization, scalability, and systemic redesign to preserve the feel of the original experience on less powerful hardware.

As standalone devices increasingly dominate the market, developers are being forced to rethink how traditionally PC VR-native experiences can adapt to mobile hardware constraints without sacrificing their core identity.

It doesn't sound like there are plans for a PlayStation VR2 version on PS5 at this time.

Community response to the reveal has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic so far. Players across Reddit and VR forums described the announcement as one of the biggest surprises in recent VR memory, with many highlighting the original game’s influence on the broader VR shooter landscape.

No release date has been announced yet, but additional details are expected later this year.
