An enhanced API for the company's speech-to-text model Whisper has also been launched.
OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT and DALL-E 2, has shared a new blog post announcing that it is launching new developer APIs for ChatGPT and the speech-to-text model Whisper, allowing developers to integrate the models into their products and services at a significantly reduced price.
According to the announcement, the new ChatGPT API will use the GPT-3.5-turbo model family, the same one used by the latest version of the chatbot itself, and will be priced at $0.002 per 1K tokens, making it around ten times cheaper than the company's existing GPT-3.5 models, a significant cost reduction achieved "through a series of system-wide optimizations."
The Whisper API, on the other hand, is similar to the open-source version of the model, unveiled by OpenAI back in September 2022, but comes with various optimizations that allow for faster performance compared to other services. The API is priced at $0.006 per minute and is available through the Transcriptions (transcribes in the source language) and Translations (transcribes into English) endpoints.
In response to customer feedback regarding privacy and security concerns, OpenAI has also announced updates to its developer terms, including the decision to no longer use data submitted through the API for service improvements, including AI model training, without developer opt-in, implementing a default 30-day data retention policy, and simplifying its terms regarding data ownership to clarify that users own the input and output of the models.
"We believe that AI can provide incredible opportunities and economic empowerment to everyone, and the best way to achieve that is to allow everyone to build with it," comments the team. "We hope that the changes we announced today will lead to numerous applications that everyone can benefit from. Start building next-generation apps powered by ChatGPT and Whisper."
