Pizza Tower Runs on Nintendo 3DS Due to Custom GML Runner Called Cinnamon

Check out Casriel's tool that brings GameMaker: Studio games to older Nintendo consoles.

Programmer Casriel showcased progress on Cinnamon, an open-source re-implementation of the GameMaker: Studio runner for older Nintendo consoles – 3DS and Wii U.

In the video above, the developer shows Cinnamon running the SAGE 2019 Demo of Pizza Tower, a 2D platformer created by Tour De Pizza using GameMaker Studio 2, on the 3DS, and notes that it's one of many games Cinnamon will be able to run at release.

Casriel explains that when an artist creates a game in GameMaker: Studio, a free engine for 2D games, and exports it, the engine exports the game code as bytecode instead of native compiled code. Since the games compile to bytecode, they can run on any platform with a runner for it, and developers can build their own runner to port GameMaker games to new devices. One such project is Butterscotch, an open-source reimplementation of the GameMaker runner, and Cinnamon is built as its fork.

The solution, created without any AI involvement, lets games such as Undertale Yellow, Undertale, and Deltarune run on the 3DS and Wii U. The developer said Cinnamon might support other Nintendo consoles in the future. You can learn the details on GitHub.

Cinnamon was made for the ports of Project Sunshine, which is a collection of fan-made ports of Undertale, Deltarune, and Undertale Yellow for the Wii U, Wii, GameCube, and 3DS.
