Playerbase is PlayStation's Plan to Officially Scan Gamers into Games
Sony’s Playerbase initiative introduces a pipeline for scanning actual players into PlayStation Studios games, combining photogrammetry, performance capture, and player data.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has introduced Playerbase, a new initiative aimed at bringing real players directly into PlayStation Studios games, not just as testers, but as digitally captured participants.
While the program includes traditional feedback opportunities as testers, one of its most notable aspects is its focus on scanning players and integrating them into game worlds, enabling developers to populate environments with real-world likenesses and performances.
At its core, Playerbase builds on technologies already used in AAA production, particularly photogrammetry and performance capture.
Players will likely be captured using multi-camera rigs that photograph them from all angles. These images are then processed into high-resolution 3D models, including facial detail, body proportions, and textures. Then, additional scans or recordings capture facial movement data, which can be mapped onto rigs for animation and dialogue. And in some cases, players may also contribute motion data, allowing their movements to inform in-game animations or background performances.
Rather than turning every participant into a main character, Playerbase is expected to focus on scalable integration of real players into game worlds. That likely means crowd and background characters, live-service updates, cameos, and things like that.
You can sign up for a chance to be officially scanned into a game right here. PlayStation will review applications and select a limited number of finalists for video interviews, and then one lucky fan will be selected to be featured in Gran Turismo 7 to kick off the program.
Over time, the Playerbase program is intended to expand.
"One PlayStation fan will be selected to be featured in Gran Turismo 7 as part of The Playerbase, where they will have a special limited-time appearance as an in-game character portrait, similar to how characters are presented throughout the game. The selected fan will also help design a custom Fantasy Logo and a one-of-a-kind vehicle livery, which will be added permanently to the Showcase menu. They will be invited to a visual arts studio in Los Angeles for a scanning day and to collaborate with a designer to create their Fantasy Logo and vehicle livery."
