Playstack Acquires Mobile Developer Magic Fuel Games

The acquisition reunites the Electronic Arts veterans who previously worked together on key EA franchises including SimCity.

London-based games technology business Playstack announced it has acquired a US mobile developer Magic Fuel Games. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Magic Fuel is specializing in city-building and management mobile games. Its portfolio includes such games as World War Bots, Love Cooking, and Fort Stars, and currently, the studio is working on a new project – Cityscape: Rebuild.

The studio was founded in 2015 by former Electronic Arts employees Kevin Shrapnell (CEO), Rajan Tande (CTO), Kip Katsarelis (CPO), and Chi Chan (Head of Art). It is based in San Francisco, however, its team operates remotely.

The acquisition reunites the four co-founders with PlayStack CEO Harvey Elliott who worked together with them on several projects at EA, including the city-building video game series SimCity. As a part of the deal, Magic Fuel CEO Kevin Shrapnell will take on the role of Chief Operating Officer at Playstack.

Commenting on the deal, Harvey Elliott said: "The addition of Magic Fuel brings further IP to the Playstack portfolio, adds revenue to 2022 and 2023 operations, and allows us to accelerate our strategic ambitions."

"We have long admired the way in which Playstack approaches game publishing, and are thrilled to become part of this exciting organization," Shrapnell added. "Magic Fuel and Playstack have a shared belief in the untapped potential that simulation-based games present, and we are delighted to be able to add our passion and expertise for this genre to that of the Playstack team."
